Big Break Sandals contestant Ryann O’toole stopped in today.

I have known Ryann O’toole for just over 3 years now. It started out as golf friends through a mutual friend, and slowly built into a club fitting relationship/friendship . Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take care of Ryann’s clubs before she went off to The Big Break Sandals Resort, but as soon as she got back we took a peak at what she had in the bag!

She came down to see me first for her clubs at Talega Golf Club in San Clemente, CA. This is her home town so it was convenient to stop by while visiting family. She had been playing the clubs that were “custom fit” for her by the Callaway Golf Tour Dept. in Carlsbad, CA. So the first thing we looked at was the current set up she had in her bag.

Remember that when we measure flex on clients golf clubs we break them down by number to be more exact.

7.0 = X flex

6.0= Stiff Flex

5.0= Regular Flex and so on down to 1.0 being a Junior Flex….

When I put her irons that were supposed to be a 6.o on the flex scale they came out to the following numbers:

3- 4.3

4- 6.5

5- 6.6

6- 6.8

7- 7.1

8- 6.8

9- 7.2

PW- 7.0

50* – 5.3

55* – 5.5

60*- 5.3

As you can see from the numbers above the flexes were anything but 6.0 like she asked for. Obviously the first thing we did was take out those shafts and insert shafts that were the proper flex.

Next was her driver. They fit her into a Diamana Redboard shaft. I was immediately disturbed with this because the Redboard is used to give golfers a higher launch with a little more spin on the ball. Ryann is an extremely strong golfer who generates a lot of speed and needs no help getting spin on the ball or launching it in the air properly. So I had her hit her driver on the TRACKMAN Launch Monitor first. She was averaging 258 yard. Not bad by any means, BUT factoring in her swing speed the ball should have been flying further. Her average backspin rate was well over 3,000 rpms. With the driver you want your back spin much lower around 2300 rpms for the optimal carry and roll on a driver.

The first thing we did was go to the newer Diablo Tour head and put a Fubuki shaft into it. This is a much lower spin combination driver. Instantly she was hitting the golf ball 10-15 yards further. Not to mention straighter with a tigher ball flight as well.

We are very excited with the success that Ryann is seeing with her new golf clubs on the course. She has since won two Duramed Futures Tour events and is inside the top 10 female golfers to receieve their LPGA card next year!

Please follow and root for her the next two weeks as she is going to play in the  Canadian Womens Open. We are wishing her the best and for a strong finish to a great year.

And for those of you who don’t know Ryann here are a few of her recent accomplishments in golf:

DUSTIN JOHNSON ROBBED?????

Watching this made me a little sick. I think the fans and crowds of people disguised the area to much to discover the true nature of the hazard he hit from. He didnt know it was a trap and would have never grounded his club if he had known it. Unfortunate for Kaymer, the PGA and Dustin. This major has been tainted in my opinion.

Walking through the crowd of fans you could not make out the grounds. Hard to see formations. The sand that the ball was resting on was well traveled with shoe marks and looked to be a beaten down path where fans had been walking on all week. That should have been different and Dustin should have not been called for that. Waste bunkers? Why not? How about rules officials informing them as they parted the seas of fans to see the ball? How about clearing the fans away so he could see the area better. Crowd control was bad and the trampled bunker to look like a path should not have been a hazard. What… kick out 20 people out from a trap and play out of it? Never heard of such a thing.

Either way I think it was wrong and bad for the event. Dustin was robbed.

Forever a fan of Dustin for this one. That was his Major and could have been if this debacle didn’t happen.

Can you see the bunker in the pictures below because I sure can’t. So how is Dustin supposed to be able to tell the difference. POOR POOR management PGA of America!

NICK DELIO Top Amateur Golfer in the Country stopped in today…

Nick Delio hits golf balls so hard that he cracks them.

Twice during the California Amateur championship, the long-hitting Delio — a member of the new-generation bomb-and-gouge school of play — had to take broken balls out of play after smashing them with tee shots.

Nick Delio hits golf balls so hard that he cracks them.

Twice during the California Amateur championship, the long-hitting Delio — a member of the new-generation bomb-and-gouge school of play — had to take broken balls out of play after smashing them with tee shots.

This of course did not prevent him from winning the Amateur championship in 2008 or win the SCGA Match Play at Sandpiper last week. Nick first came in a few weeks ago before the Match Play up North to check out his driver and irons. Through a lot of mashed golf balls we found that he was hitting the Mizuno MP58 with the most efficiency. The distance dispersion with his current 6 iron was anywhere from 172-190 yards. For a player as strong as Nick we weren’t looking for more distance, but for more consistancy.

Upon hitting every players club on the market from Taylormade R9 TP, Callaway X22 tour, Diablo forged, Bridgestone J38, Ping I15, Fourteen TC1000, Kyoei forged, Miura forged, Titleist CB, and AP2 irons…..We also tried all different kinds of shafts from True Temper, Steelfibers, KBS Tours, Nippon, and Rifle shafts. It wasn’t until the Mizuno irons and the X100 shaft combination the we hit the nail on the head.

Nick being as strong as he is has the ability to put too much spin on the golf ball which is why his ball was flying different distances. One shot would only have 6,000 rpms and the next would have around 8,800 rpms. Obviously the shot with 6,000 rpms has less spin and resistance which will allow the ball to fly further. On the opposite side of the spectrum the shot with 8,800 rpms has too much spin and will resist more during it’s flight. So, more spin will cause a balooning flight that won’t go as far as a shot with less spin that is more of a “flyer”.

The X100′s at a 7.4 flex were the perfect flex and release for Nick to allow his ball to spin just the right amount. Suddenly all of his shots were flying within 7 yards of each other.

So in short with the recommendation of the Mizuno irons Nick headed off to Sandpiper. He had the new irons in the bag when he started play and began his journey to a second victory at this tournament.  We appreaciate Nick choosing The Club Fix to build his golf clubs. And we look forward to many more victories in the future!

Congrats Nick!!

Tiger Woods practices with a new coach (Sean Foley) at his side at PGA

Many people in the golf world are aware by now that Tiger Woods has been talking with Sean Foley in between rounds at the PGA this week. This leads us to believe Woods may have a new man behind his swing mechanics. So I thought it would be a good time to look at the man behind the name.

Sean was born in Canada. Shortly after he moved to the US with his parents. He moved all around the states until he was 15 and he moved back to Canada. He first started playing golf at age 10, when he “fell in love” with the game. While his teaching techniques are fairly unique his students enjoy the different approach that he takes. Often times quoting phrases from the likes of Greek philosopher Aeropostale, Einstein, and other great minds. He also has a good stable of players including Sean O’hare, and Hunter Mayhan, Steven Ames, and others.

Hopefully this is going to be a good thing for the world’s #1 player, and it can get golf back into the exciting stages of the early part of this century ;)

Clayton Gray Fitting on 8-13-10

Back from another great day at Strawberry Farms doing fittings. The morning started out in a blur as I was delivering clubs, building clubs, and setting up the club fitting area for the days appointments. I also thought that I would post a few pictures of the new facility. I took the pictures with my Iphone so please excuse the quality.

So on we go to Clayton. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but he made the trip in from San Francisco to see us today. Of course I always get excited to see out of towners come into the shop. Who wouldn’t appreciate somebody hopping on a plane and flying out of town to come and see them and seek their expertise.

I’m also really happy to have the permission of my clients to post their picture and information on this blog! What a great way to show everyone that plays golf that you don’t have to be a PGA Tour player to take advantage of todays equipment. We have now fit clients from a beginning first timer to PGA Tour players and both/ALL levels of golfers have benefited equally.

Just as Clayton today started off with clubs that he knew weren’t quite right for him. We were able to dial in exact kick point/bend points in all of his shafts and minimize the side dispersion of his golf shots by going to a lower torque golf shaft as well. Clayton is getting slightly older, but was still under the impression that one must play steel shafted irons to get maximum control. We quickly showed him how false this notion shared by most golfers really was. We put him into some 95 gram Aerotech Steelfiber shafts and he was blown away by what happened next.

The Steelfiber series shafts offered by Aerotech have a patent composite technology that inter-twines both graphite and steel. Obviously this gives you the feel and flight of a graphite golf shaft, but also gives you the consistancy and control of a steel shaft. What a concept huh!!! This shaft is surely becoming a “fan favorite” in our day to day fittings.

So after the fitting today with the irons. Clayton was able to acheive a higher ball flight with a little more back spin. The higher ball flight actually gave him a little more distance, but just as important it increased the landing angle or the angle of the descension the golf ball makes from the peak to the ground. So he is experiencing a longer distance golf shot that will stop quicker on the green. Longer Straighter irons that stop faster on the green. Ha-ha, like I said it was a great day!

Safe travels back up North Mr. Gray! Thanks again for coming down to Orange County to get your clubs taken care of right.

So this is something that we have decided to do for our blog….Every day we are posting the day’s fitting with some detailed information about the fitting.

We will also post the latest golf news and equipment reviews. Look forward to your feedback and input!

Mr. Cole

Mr. Cole  is an  Irvine native that lives very close to Strawberry Farms where we are located. He came to us with the main purpose of finding a driver that would fit him better.

So we measured his current driver set up and we weren’t very surprised to see that it was much to soft for his swing speed, and the kick  point was much to low. this was causing his ball to go much too high with too much backspin. Of course the result of these two things was making his ball go much to high and plug in the fairway instead of rolling out.

First thing we did was go to a much lower spinning head with a “deeper” face from the top of the crown to the sole of the golf club. He also had a problem missing to the left of the target. So we fit him into the -PING I15- driver that has a deep face and is slightly open with the face angle.

Now just in doing this we brought his back spin rate from 4500 rpm’s to around 3700 rpm’s. His backspin rate was still over a 1000 rpm’s too much. So we worked our way through a few shafts with different kickpoints and torque numbers until we finally fixed the head into a Mitsubishi Fubuki Alpha. This shaft has been incredible for high spin players. Suddenly just by changing the driver head and shaft he went from over 4000 rpm’s to on average 2567 rpm’s. His ball speed also went from 146 to 151 on average.

Adding both speed to the golf shot and taking away the excess backspin (which plainly speaking backspin like in any sport is resistance from the ball moving forward at the maximum desired speed) we were able to see an average gain in distance of 16 yards!!

Now distance isn’t a good thing unless it’s moving in the correct direction of course. It doesn’t help anybody to hit the ball 300 yards if it’s going the wrong way. His average dispersion with his driver was 22 yards to the left of the target and by the end of the fitting it was only 14 yards left of target.

This is a picture of the final product. Enjoy!

Hello world!

Hello and welcome to The Club Fix blog!

Just as an introduction here is some information about what we do:

The Club Fix Mission

The main purpose of The Club Fix is to educate golfers about equipment and to help them find what works best for their swing. We help golfers of all levels achieve thier maximum performance by fitting them to the clubs that match their swing. Too many golfers try to fit their swing to their clubs. We use the latest and best technology provided by Trackman Golf to measure every aspect of the golf swing and flight of the golf ball. Using this technology and providing thousands of club head and shaft combinations from all the leading manufacturers in the world allows us to be exact and unbiased in determining which equipment works best for each golfer…

The custom club building service we provide is the most important aspect of our company. Buying clubs “off the rack” will almost never help a golfer get the proper equipment. After testing thousands of golf clubs from leading manufacturers (we test shaft flex, kick point, torque, loft, lie angle, length, and face angle), we have found that only 1 of every 10 golf clubs is actually what it is labeled to be. The other 9 clubs do not match the specs that are painted or engraved on them. This means that most golf shafts and club heads perform differently than they advertise. These tests allow us to identify the exact specs of each golf club. We then take the care to build each club to match the produced results from the fitting sessions. We are dedicated to providing the most accurate information and the best results for every golfer.

The Club Fix Advantage:

There is no question that custom fit golf clubs will improve your game. Here at The Club Fix we are confident that with our new technology, nobody can fit you better. Custom fit golf clubs make the game easier to play because the golf clubs are built to your playing style and ability.• Advanced players are able to tweak their golf game with custom built and fitted golf clubs.
• Average golfers will benefit because custom golf clubs will allow them to consistently hit the ball more solidly, with the proper direction, distance control, and proper trajectory.
• For beginners, custom golf clubs suited to their skill level have increased playability, providing a measure of confidence from which players can better learn to play the game.

You can get the most appropriate setup for your skill level, playing characteristics, gender and age. You will love golf even more after playing with a custom set of clubs. With clubs that fit you properly you will have confidence with every club in your bag. With consistent ball striking, properly fitted custom golf clubs will bring about noticeable improvement in your golf game.
