Big Break Sandals contestant Ryann O’toole stopped in today.

I have known Ryann O’toole for just over 3 years now. It started out as golf friends through a mutual friend, and slowly built into a club fitting relationship/friendship . Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take care of Ryann’s clubs before she went off to The Big Break Sandals Resort, but as soon as she got back we took a peak at what she had in the bag!

She came down to see me first for her clubs at Talega Golf Club in San Clemente, CA. This is her home town so it was convenient to stop by while visiting family. She had been playing the clubs that were “custom fit” for her by the Callaway Golf Tour Dept. in Carlsbad, CA. So the first thing we looked at was the current set up she had in her bag.

Remember that when we measure flex on clients golf clubs we break them down by number to be more exact.

7.0 = X flex

6.0= Stiff Flex

5.0= Regular Flex and so on down to 1.0 being a Junior Flex….

When I put her irons that were supposed to be a 6.o on the flex scale they came out to the following numbers:

3- 4.3

4- 6.5

5- 6.6

6- 6.8

7- 7.1

8- 6.8

9- 7.2

PW- 7.0

50* – 5.3

55* – 5.5

60*- 5.3

As you can see from the numbers above the flexes were anything but 6.0 like she asked for. Obviously the first thing we did was take out those shafts and insert shafts that were the proper flex.

Next was her driver. They fit her into a Diamana Redboard shaft. I was immediately disturbed with this because the Redboard is used to give golfers a higher launch with a little more spin on the ball. Ryann is an extremely strong golfer who generates a lot of speed and needs no help getting spin on the ball or launching it in the air properly. So I had her hit her driver on the TRACKMAN Launch Monitor first. She was averaging 258 yard. Not bad by any means, BUT factoring in her swing speed the ball should have been flying further. Her average backspin rate was well over 3,000 rpms. With the driver you want your back spin much lower around 2300 rpms for the optimal carry and roll on a driver.

The first thing we did was go to the newer Diablo Tour head and put a Fubuki shaft into it. This is a much lower spin combination driver. Instantly she was hitting the golf ball 10-15 yards further. Not to mention straighter with a tigher ball flight as well.

We are very excited with the success that Ryann is seeing with her new golf clubs on the course. She has since won two Duramed Futures Tour events and is inside the top 10 female golfers to receieve their LPGA card next year!

Please follow and root for her the next two weeks as she is going to play in the  Canadian Womens Open. We are wishing her the best and for a strong finish to a great year.

And for those of you who don’t know Ryann here are a few of her recent accomplishments in golf:
